Signs of labor (when to call):

  • If membranes rupture. It is important to call immediately, especially if you are Group B strep positive.
  • If you are a first-time mom with contractions occurring every 5 minutes for 2 hours.  Time your contractions from the beginning of one contraction to the beginning of the next.  Labor contractions feel intense, and require concentrating and breathing to get through them.  You should not be able to talk through a labor contraction.
  • If you have had a baby before and contractions are feeling like labor. Keep in mind that this labor may progress more quickly than the last labor.
  • Loss of mucous plug or bloody show is not significant for labor; there is no need to call or go to the FMC.
