Prep: Adults: Nothing by Mouth: including smoking or chewing gum for 8 hours prior to exam. Patients may drink a little water if they are thirsty, but nothing for one hour before the exam. Patients should take their medications.
Children: (Infant to 6 years old): nothing to eat or drink 2 hours prior to exam. Babies who are being examined for pyloric stenosis do not need any preparation. Parent should have a bottle ready to feed the infant during the examination.

Prep: Nothing by mouth for 8 hours prior to the exam. May have small amount of water if thirsty. Diabetic patients can drink fruit juice to maintain their blood sugar, up until 1 hour before exam.

Prep: Ages 12 years and older: the patient needs to finish drinking 32 ounces of water 45 minutes before exam. Patient can not void until the sonographer has finished the bladder films.
Ages 8-12 years: the patient needs to empty the bladder first, then finish drinking 16 ounces of water 1 hour before exam. Patient can not void till the sonographer has finished the bladder films.

Prep: Patient needs to empty their bladder, then finish drinking 16-24 ounces of water 1 hour before exam. Patient can not void till the sonographer has finished the bladder films.
Prep: Ages 12 years and older: the patient needs to empty their bladder, then finish drinking 32 ounces of water 45 minutes before exam. Patient can not void till the sonographer has finished the bladder films.
Ages 8-12 years: the patient needs to empty their bladder, then finish drinking 8 ounces of water 30 minutes before exam. Patient can not void till the sonographer has finished the bladder films.
Ages 0-8 years: none
Prep: Nothing by mouth for 8 hours prior to exam. May have small amount of water if thirsty. Patients should take their medications. Diabetic patients can drink fruit juice to maintain their blood sugar, up until 1 hour before exam. Drink lots of water the day before the exam.
Prep: Nothing by mouth for 8 hours before the exam. Patient should take their medications in the morning with clear liquids, then nothing by mouth.
