Before Your Spine, Back or Neck Surgery

Once insurance authorization is obtained for your procedure, you will be scheduled for surgery.

You will receive a written copy of instructions in the form of a packet or binder. It is important you, your family, and care takers read all of the instructions. The packet provides information about preparing for surgery, reviews the procedure itself, and explains after surgery care.

You will also receive an email invitation to join the MyCarePlan App, brought to you by EvergreenHealth and Wellpepper. The mobile app is a great way to receive key pieces of information, task reminders and instructional exercise videos.

If you do not receive an invitation or have questions about the app please contact for assistance.

Pre-Op Educational Video

We know that the best patient is the most informed patient.

Research shows that patients who learn about the surgery process before going through it are less anxious about the surgery and recovery, and often experience better outcomes.

The following video, to be used in conjunction with your surgical packet, will give you and your caregiver a preview of the steps in your surgical journey, including:

  • home preparation
  • caregiver needs
  • preparing for surgery
  • surgery risks
  • surgery and recovery
  • discharge

Care Management

If you have scheduled a surgery requiring an overnight stay in the hospital, you may speak with an EvergreenHealth care manager regarding your home care needs.

Your care manager will consult with your care team to make sure you have access to any needed equipment and/or home health services if medically necessary.

Pre-Surgery Evaluation

Three to ten days prior to your surgery, a registered nurse from our Pre-op Clinic will call to evaluate your health for anesthesia clearance. The nurse will:

  • review your medical history and order any necessary lab or X-ray tests.
  • provide instruction for eating, drinking and medication prior to surgery; for post-op pain management; and any procedure-specific instructions.
  • schedule a visit for selected patients to the Pre-op Clinic or a specialty physician.

This is also a good opportunity to ask any questions about your anesthesia you may have prior to your surgery.

Your Surgery Preparation Calendar

Our surgery preparation calendar will help you prepare step-by-step for both your spine surgery and recovery.
