KIRKLAND, Wash. — EvergreenHealth's Board of Commissioners has recognized Francis X. Riedo, MD, with the 2025 Community Service Award in honor of his more than three decades of exceptional service as an infectious disease physician.

As medical director of infection control and prevention at EvergreenHealth, Dr. Riedo has dedicated his life's work to understanding and investigating infectious disease. Throughout his career, he has been known for his clinical excellence, professional integrity, sound judgment and deep commitment to placing patients and community health at the center of his work.

In 2020, Dr. Riedo played a central role in EvergreenHealth's COVID-19 response. As hospitals across the country anticipated the arrival of the virus, Dr. Riedo drew on his decades of experience to prepare EvergreenHealth for the nation's most complex public health crisis—and his forward thinking is part of what positioned the Kirkland-based hospital system to be the first in the country to test for and treat a surge of patients affected by the spread of COVID-19.

"I'm deeply honored to receive this award," Dr. Riedo said. "Caring for this community alongside so many talented colleagues has been one of the great privileges of my career. I'm especially grateful to the nurses, physicians and public health partners who worked alongside me through our most difficult days, and to the patients who have trusted me with their care."

His impact extends well beyond the pandemic. Dr. Riedo has mentored generations of clinicians, strengthened collaboration among physicians, nurses and public health partners, and helped build a culture of inquiry, accountability and continuous improvement across the organization.

"Dr. Riedo represents the very best of what it means to serve this community," said EvergreenHealth Board of Commissioners Chair Virgil Snyder. "His clinical expertise helped guide EvergreenHealth through one of the most challenging moments in our history, and his mentorship has shaped generations of clinicians who carry his standard of care forward. This award is a small measure of our gratitude for his more than three decades of extraordinary leadership and service at EvergreenHealth."

The award was presented during the July 21 Board of Commissioners meeting and is the first of two 2025 Community Service Awards being presented by the Board this year. The second award will be presented later this year.

Since 1998, the Community Service Award has been presented to community members and groups who make a profound impact on enhancing the health of the Eastside and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to our most important values: compassion, respect, excellence, collaboration and accountability.
