EvergreenHealth Recognized by Leapfrog for Outstanding Hospital Safety for Third Consecutive Year

The health system was awarded an “A” rating from The Leapfrog Group

Patient Safety "A" grade iconKirkland, Wash. – EvergreenHealth announced today that it has earned an “A” rating from The Leapfrog Group, a leading independent watchdog organization on hospital quality and safety. This is the third consecutive year that the health system has been awarded Leapfrog’s highest “A” rating for patient safety, as part of the organization’s annual fall review.

“Once again, our ‘A’ rating is a testament to the ongoing commitment of every provider, staff member and volunteer to deliver exceptional, high-quality, safe and collaborative care,” said Jeff Tomlin, MD, CEO of EvergreenHealth. “We’re honored to be continually recognized by The Leapfrog Group for our dedication to the absolute safety and service that our community has come to expect from us.”

Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grade report scores hospitals across the country, assessing how well they keep patients safe from errors, accidents and infections. EvergreenHealth is one of only 16 hospitals in Washington to achieve an “A” rating this fall, according to Leapfrog’s latest Hospital Safety Grades report.

The Fall 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades assign letter grades – A, B, C, D and F – to general acute-care hospitals across the U.S. by using more than 30 evidenced-based measures of patient safety from publicly available hospital safety data. These measurements are compiled by The Leapfrog Group, CMS, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the CDC and the American Hospital Association. Of the nearly 3,000 hospitals graded, EvergreenHealth was among the 32% that earned an A grade, while 26% earned a B, 35% earned a C, 7% earned a D and less than 1% hospitals earned an F.

Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement towards a better health care system by improving the choices patients can make and preventing needless deaths. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade was developed in 2012 under the guidance of a national expert panel and is calculated and peer-reviewed by top patient safety experts.

“An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a tremendous achievement, of which this community should be extremely proud,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I thank the leadership and workforce of EvergreenHealth for its commitment to prioritizing patients and their safety, especially during these trying times.”

In addition to high scores from The Leapfrog Group, EvergreenHealth is named as one of Healthgrades’ “America’s 50 Best Hospitals” in 2021 and was recognized in U.S. News & World Report’s “2021 Best Hospitals” rankings.
