EvergreenHealth Announces Grand Opening of New Intensive Care Unit
The Lee Johnson Family ICU will soon open its doors to patients and their families
Kirkland, Wash. – EvergreenHealth recently announced the grand opening of its newly constructed intensive care unit (ICU), which will open its doors on Thursday, July 15. The new ICU, named for its benefactor the Lee Johnson Family, enables EvergreenHealth to continue serving patients and families with the highest quality care and service from a state-of-the-art unit that combines the latest health care technology, compassionate design and inclusive functionality in the most advanced healing environment.
The 22,000 square foot, 20-bed ICU is located on the third floor of EvergreenHealth’s Silver Tower on the main hospital campus in Kirkland and relocates the unit from the oldest part of the hospital to a newer, more convenient location. By situating the new ICU closer to other clinical specialties and amenities such as the café, parking garages and the main entrance, the health system hopes to ease the experience for patients and their families in their times of need.
“We are very excited to open the doors to our new Lee Johnson Family ICU! As we reflect on our nearly 50-year legacy of service to our community, we renew our commitment to serving patients and families with exceptional, safe, high-quality care provided in a thoughtful environment that promotes well-being and compassionate service for patients, their families and our caregivers,” said Jeff Tomlin, MD, CEO of EvergreenHealth. “Plans for constructing a brand-new ICU were well underway when EvergreenHealth became the first hospital in the country to care for an influx of patients with cases of COVID-19. We gained invaluable experience caring for these patients and it emphasized the need for a modern, state of the art, ICU facility, ready to serve our community.”
The new ICU features state-of-the-art technology, including upgraded equipment and innovative technology in an environment that best supports patient care. The unit’s design allows for structural flexibility that promotes the future integration of new systems, upgraded medical equipment and technological innovations as they emerge, meaning the unit can plan for the future without requiring additional renovations.
Importantly, the Lee Johnson Family ICU was designed to create intentional spaces within patient rooms, and across the unit, that help families feel welcome and included in their loved one’s care. The unit will also have private consultation rooms for families to gather as a group, seek solitude or talk with their clinical team.
The newly designed ICU integrates important features that better allow the clinical team to provide the best possible care and service, as well. It will allow clinical staff to administer dialysis, when necessary, and offers staff ceiling lifts to support and help patients that cannot move independently on their own. In addition, each nurse station is equipped with monitors and a visible line of sight to each patient, so nurses can best support their patients and their health care needs.
Donors from the Evergreen Gala in 2020, the EvergreenHealth Foundation’s signature fundraising event, and community supporters, including Christopher and Margery Yetman, the Chinese Community Alliance and Emerald Heights, were instrumental in providing this continued environment of a safe, family-centered medical care as the Eastside community continues to grow. During the gala, guests raised $1.26 million to support the equipment and technology of the Lee Johnson Family ICU.
EvergreenHealth will hold a virtual celebration where the Eastside community is invited to celebrate the importance of critical care and get a sneak peek into the unit itself.
