EvergreenHealth Nationally Recognized with Leapfrog’s “A” Rating for Hospital Safety

Kirkland, Wash. – The Leapfrog Group, a leading independent watchdog organization on hospital quality and safety, has awarded EvergreenHealth a third consecutive “A” rating for patient safety. Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grade scores hospitals across the country, assessing how well they keep patients safe from errors, accidents and infections.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. Each hospital is assigned an A, B, C, D or F grade, with A representing the gold standard for hospital safety.

“Once again, our ‘A’ grade is a testament to the ongoing commitment of every provider, staff member and volunteer to deliver exceptional, skilled, compassionate and collaborative care,” said Jeff Tomlin, MD, CEO of EvergreenHealth. “This has always been our standard, and has been even more apparent in these past months, during COVID-19, when we continue to provide the absolute safety and service our community has come to expect from us.”

Of the more than 2,600 hospitals evaluated for the Spring 2020 grade, 858 earned an “A” grade, 650 earned a “B,” 810 earned a “C,” 182 earned a “D” and 26 hospitals earned an “F” grade. In Washington state, 16 hospitals earned an “A” including Swedish in Edmonds, Issaquah and Ballard; University of Washington Medical Center; and Virginia Mason Medical Center.

Launched in 2012 as a way to reflect transparent hospital safety and practices, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade was developed under the guidance of a national expert panel and is calculated and peer-reviewed by top patient safety experts. The scores are based on publicly reported measures from national data sources, including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the American Hospital Association. Hospitals do not pay to be evaluated by Leapfrog nor can they opt out of the process.

The Leapfrog Group is a national leader and advocate in hospital transparency, with the overarching goal of saving lives by reducing errors, injuries, accidents and infections. The Hospital Safety Grade is designed to help patients and families make informed decisions in selecting safe, high-quality care.

“As the nation copes with a challenging pandemic, our gratitude extends to hospital leadership and health care workers everywhere for their tremendous dedication,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We hope this ‘A’ helps to thank the people who work and volunteer for EvergreenHealth. They are role models in putting patients first, and their service has been extraordinary in our country’s time of need.”
