EvergreenHealth Welcomes New Senior Vice President Chief Nursing Officer
Mary Shepler, RN, BSN, MA, NEA-BC, will join the health system’s executive leadership team
Kirkland, Wash. – EvergreenHealth is pleased to announce that Mary Shepler, RN, BSN, MA, NEA-BC, has joined the health system as senior vice president chief nursing officer (CNO). Shepler was selected through an extensive national search, and replaces Nancee Hofmeister, MSN, RN, NE-BC, who is retiring from EvergreenHealth after serving as the health system’s CNO since 2012.
Shepler is a highly regarded health care operations executive with extensive experience overseeing nursing, clinical, technology and quality improvement operations across large-scale health care and hospital systems. Throughout her career, Shepler has been known by her colleagues to lead with integrity, compassion and transparency in her steadfast commitment to evidence-based practices and clinical outcomes.
Shepler most recently served as vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer for SCL Health – St. Joseph Hospital, a 400-bed teaching hospital in Denver, Colorado. In her role, she spearheaded a number of patient satisfaction improvement projects that led to the organization’s first American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Magnet Designation in 2017.
“Mary’s philosophy of collaborative, high-quality care and devotion to one-on-one, patient-focused practices align well with our values, and we know that she will enrich our health system in many ways,” said Dr. Amy Beiter, chief executive officer of EvergreenHealth.
Among many of her accomplishments at SCL Health, Shepler orchestrated the adoption of high reliability principles and the introduction of daily safety huddles, which eventually yielded a 90 percent reduction in serious safety events.
Previously, Shepler was the chief clinical informatics officer and interim chief nursing officer at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, where she also served as director of critical care, cardiovascular and neurology, and director of performance, improvement and quality.
Shepler earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Northern Colorado, and her master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix. She also holds a Nurse Executive, Advanced Certification (NEA-BC) and will complete her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Capella University next year.
