Anterior Approach Hip Replacement

Direct anterior approach hip replacement surgery is a great option for people who are looking for a speedy return to their active lifestyle.

What are the differences between the direct anterior approach and a traditional hip replacement?

  • In a traditional hip replacement, the surgeon operates on the patient from the side.
  • In a direct anterior approach hip replacement, the surgeon operates on the patient from the front (as shown in the image).

Another difference is the size of the incision.

  • A traditional hip replacement uses an 8-10 inch incision.
  • Direct anterior approach hip replacement uses a 3-4 inch incision because of its specialized surgical table and minimally invasive techniques.

The small incision eliminates the need to cut tendons or muscles in order to reach the hip; this results in reduced muscle damage, reduced pain, a faster recovery and fewer restrictions on the activities you're excited to get back to.

In fact, most patients are able to leave the hospital the same day as the surgery to recuperate at home.

Orthopedic surgeons at EvergreenHealth are among the few in the region performing this new approach to hip replacement.
