Learn more about our Level III Trauma Center in Kirkland & Level IV Trauma Center in Monroe

EvergreenHealth Kirkland's Emergency Department is designated a Level III Trauma Center, delivering 24/7 emergency care and operating room capabilities. EvergreenHealth Monroe's Emergency Department is designated a Level IV Trauma Center providing excellent care to stabilize and get patients to definitive care.

What Does it Mean to Be a Trauma Center?

In 1990, the Washington Legislature passed the Trauma Care Systems Act, creating a comprehensive statewide trauma system. Washington's trauma system designates five levels of acute trauma care (I–V) based on the services, resources, and capabilities a hospital can provide. These levels help EMS and hospitals ensure patients get the right care at the right place and time.

  • The Washington State Department of Health (WA DOH) uses these Trauma Center designations to recognize care facilities that provide comprehensive, high-quality emergency services for anyone experiencing a severe, life-threatening illness or injury.
  • EvergreenHealth's Kirkland and Monroe Emergency Departments undergo regular surveys and must meet numerous licensing requirements to qualify as trauma centers.
  • This designation signifies that our Emergency Departments are staffed by expert care providers and are equipped with the latest medical technology to diagnose and treat you and your loved ones as quickly and as thoroughly as possible.

The WA DOH provides an interactive map of trauma services across the entire state of Washington.

Common Reasons to Visit the Emergency Department

Depending on the time of year, there are many reasons you or a loved one may require emergency care. That's why it's important to take everyday steps to prevent trauma.

We've developed a partial list of conditions and injuries that might bring you into the Emergency Department and information on how to prevent them.

Fractures and Falls

Broken bones and torn ligaments or tendons from falls and sports injuries are among the most common reasons to visit an Emergency Department. Some tips to avoid falls and many orthopedic-related injuries include:

  • Exercise regularly.
  • Always warm up and cool down properly.
  • Wear the proper gear.
  • Remove clutter around your home.
  • Avoid moving furniture often.
  • Be aware of uneven flooring and clean up spills as soon as possible.

Kids are at risk for window falls

  • Always watch small children closely.
  • Never open windows more than 4 inches.
  • Open windows from the top down, if possible.
  • Move furniture away from windows.
  • Install window stops or child-safety window guards.
  • Never rely on window screens to keep children from falling out a window.
  • Screens are designed to pop out for fire safety—the weight of a toddler can easily push through a screen.

Transportation-Related Injuries

Injuries caused by motor vehicle collisions or crashes involving bicycles, scooters and skateboards are another big reason why you or your loved ones might need to visit the Emergency Department. Oftentimes, these crashes are unavoidable when you are not at fault, but some steps to take to prevent injuries include:

  • Get your child's car seat checked to ensure proper installation and size.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • Silence your phone and place it out of reach while you drive to avoid distractions.
  • For bikes, skateboards, scooters, skiing and snowboarding you should always wear a helmet.
  • You could also consider wearing reflective gear to alert drivers and other riders.

Burns

Another common injury seen in the Emergency Department is a burn. Depending on the severity of the burn, you may need medical attention. The American Burn Association suggests the following tips to treat burns and when to seek care:

  1. Assess the Severity: A first-degree burn appears red and the skin will have minor pain similar to a sunburn. A second-degree burn will often have blistering, swelling and pain deeper below the skin. A third-degree burn is the most serious and will cause the skin to appear white or charred, but it is less painful due to nerve damage.
  2. Immediate Steps: Get away from the source of the flame quickly and cool the burn with cool, not cold, water for 10 minutes. Then remove any tight clothing or accessories near the burn in case swelling starts.
  3. Cover the Burn: Using a clean, non-stick bandage, loosely wrap the burned area. Avoid using ointments on fresh burns.

You should head to the emergency department if:

  • The burn is larger than 3 inches or on the face, hands, feet or groin.
  • The burn appears deep (third-degree).
  • The victim has trouble breathing, signs of shock or other serious symptoms.
