Our Fundamentals of Diabetes series includes a pre-class consultation followed by three classes. Each class builds on the knowledge and skills presented in the previous sessions, so it’s important to take them in succession.
We’ll review your health history and provide you with beginning information about diabetes. We’ll also provide a free glucometer if you don’t already have one.
This first class will provide you with a strong foundation for diabetes self-management. You’ll learn why it’s important to manage your diabetes and be shown how to monitor your progress at home. We’ll also look at how the food you eat affects your blood glucose, and explain what to do when your blood glucose gets too high or too low. You'll also practice setting SMART goals for the healthy management of your diabetes. Available dates
You’ll build upon your strong foundation with tools and skills to help you avoid diabetic complications. We’ll cover diabetic foot checks, talk about how your diabetes medications work and goal setting. We'll help you learn how to predict problems so you can avoid emergencies, and give you tips to consider when coping with the challenges that come your way. You’ll want to dress comfortably for this class, as you’ll be participating in a low-impact activity program. Available dates
The series concludes with an in-depth look at lifestyle choices around food and exercise. You will learn and practice carbohydrate counting, create diabetic-friendly menu plans, get the lowdown on how to read nutrition labels, and get tips for how to eat right when you’re away from home.
