Dr. Prakash Varadarajan is an experienced hematologist and oncologist. After completing his fellowship, he joined a community hematology oncology practice where he provided cancer care for patients in several rural areas spread across central Michigan. He quickly learned the complexities of providing care over vast distances, treating all types of cancers and blood diseases. He then worked as a community hematologist-oncologist at CHI Franciscan Health in Lakewood and Tacoma.
Dr. Varadarajan has been fortunate to be able to include patients in multiple NCORP and industry clinical trials over the years. Finding the right patient for a great clinical trial is a joy, especially when it expands the therapeutic arsenal, while simultaneously helping in real time.

Personal Information

Growing up, I was a voracious reader fascinated by science. This interest drew me to medical school. Towards the end of my program, my grandfather fought and died from glioblastoma, going from being an independent retired police officer to completely dependent on his kids in a short time, which profoundly affected me.
Over the course of my medical training, working with mentors and role models in the various oncology disciplines for a sustained period of time, I was further drawn to hematology/oncology as a vocation. Cancer treatment demands a balanced mix of thought and work that keeps me motivated every day.
On the personal front, I enjoy distance running, hiking and kayaking. I've lately taken to gardening and find it very relaxing. I also enjoy reading, from fiction to behavioral science, in any format.
My goal is to learn and incorporate a new activity every year. This year I am focused on swimming and learning to sail.
