Philosophy of Care
When I first meet patients, they are often very sick; some are approaching the end of their lives. Whatever has been going on up to this point hasn't worked, and they've landed here in the hospital. It's a true emergency but there's often time to find a better way forward.
For me, meeting a patient for the first time, it's about showing up with humility, humor, and improvisation while listening to them and their families. I strive to offer and coordinate as many resources as possible from the hospital's multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, specialists, social workers, case managers, chaplains, therapists, and nutritionists. I also add a dash of project management; we will often draw up a daily plan on the whiteboard as we forge a new plan of care together.
I am keenly interested in getting to the root of a patient's problem whenever possible. By hearing a patient's story, we can write our way forward, improve their situation and send their case off in a newer, better direction.
