Philosophy of Care

My favorite part of family medicine is being able to care for all people throughout the lifespan, especially for whole families. I try to understand your health (and your health struggles) in the larger context of your life, and I try to partner with you to come up with an individualized plan for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up that will be right for you, rather than a one-size-fits-all declaration, while still informed by evidence-based science and national guidelines.
I try to take time to listen, consider, explain, and collaborate with you, rather than just reflexively prescribing another pill. I think preventive care is also critically important at all stages of life; vaccines and birth control are truly among my most favorite things.
It's an honor and a privilege to be your doctor. I look forward to working with you to achieve your health goals and well being!

Personal Information

I have always loved family medicine, women's health and preventive care. I attended both college and medical school at the University of Washington, then went to Vermont for my family medicine training. When that was complete, I returned to this area to be close to my family, who still live in Edmonds where I grew up.
In my free time, I love cooking (especially baking), skiing in winter and paddle boarding in summer, and spending time with my family.

Also the doctor was very attentive in the room but when it came to discussing results I was not able to talk to the provider in person and felt summarily dismissed through a short portal message.

Dr. Van Swearingen listens to my concerns and is respectful and helpful in recommending tests or treatment to address those concerns. She also considers my overall situation caring for my husband.

Did not care to dive deeper on what the issue is. I gained 45lbs in 5 months. I need to sleep 13 hours a day and still feel tired. When she gave me my lab results, she didn't even address the issue of weight gain despite no lifestyle changes. Not even a generic eat healthier pull from the web or a I don't know. As if my issue does not matter. Her solution was iron supplements for only lower ferritin levels.

She was rather curt and seemed to have decided before she came in the room that I was irresponsible and questioned the truthfulness of everything I said. She even seemed not to believe that I had a pap 2 years ago like I claimed.

Dr. Ingrid Swearingen was responsive, communitive and compassionate regarding a chronic medical condition that I have. She gave extensive recommendations for a plan of treatment and rationale for that treatment. I saw the road that I need to take and included the projected plan and options for 3 months into the future. She is a new Provider for me, as I am a new patient with her and I feel confident with her competent judgement.

She was so thoughtful and fully answered all of my questions and put me at ease.

I was not a fan of the 15 minute lecture regarding the care providers opinion on why I should get the flu shot, when this is my right to decline.
