Experience

I have been practicing medicine for 6 years and have focused on hematology and medical oncology. Before joining Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center Evergreen, I worked for 3 years at the University of Washington (UW), the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in South Lake Union, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. During that time, I cared for patients with a wide breadth of cancers as well as hematologic illnesses. I am particularly interested in precision medicine approaches that learn what makes each patient's cancer unique and that allow oncologists to tailor cancer treatments to each individual patient for optimal outcomes.
While at UW/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center/FHCRC, I opened a clinical trial to apply multiple precision tumor profiling approaches to patients with biliary tract cancers. I also conducted research on how different genetic changes in pancreatic cancers lead to different tumor behavior and clinical outcomes. I therefore have particular clinical expertise in gastrointestinal cancers, but have a broad interest in bringing personalized medicine approaches to all solid tumors and malignant blood disorders.

Philosophy of Care

As a physician, I see myself as a source of expert knowledge and a guide for patients as they navigate the complex landscape of hematologic and oncologic healthcare. I like to get to know my patients, understand their goals and then make a shared decision on what path forward would bring them the best quality of life and meet their goals. The illnesses I treat often cause patients a lot of uncertainty, and I hope that, with my guidance, my patients can feel confident in their healthcare decisions.

Personal Information

Outside of work, I enjoy being outdoors with my wife and son: hiking, gardening, and swimming. Staying healthy and active keeps me feeling happy and hopeful, and allows me to be my best self for my patients and family. I encourage all my patients to stay active, as they are able, because I've found that regular activity helps patients tolerate cancer treatments far better. To quote Sir William Osler, the father of modern medicine, "Patients should have rest, food, fresh air and exercise - the quadrangle of health."
