Practicing Since
Dr. John Manning is an orthopedic subspecialist who is fellowship trained in sports medicine and arthroscopic (minimally invasive) surgery of the shoulder, hip, and knee. His practice emphasizes the treatment of athletes of all ages and ability levels, and he has significant experience treating high level collegiate and professional athletes. He previously served as a team physician for the University of Southern California, including football, basketball, and women's soccer. While in San Diego, he participated in a reciprocal training program with Naval Medical Center San Diego and has treated many active members of the Navy and Navy Seals.

As a former Division I collegiate athlete (football, track and field), Dr. Manning has personal experience on the patient side of sports medicine and can empathize with orthopedic setbacks and connect well with athletes. He has a keen interest in caring for athletes across the spectrum from youth sports, to professional teams, to weekend warriors of all types.

He is an expert in both surgical and nonsurgical treatment of sports and overuse injuries and has advanced training in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, hip and knee.

Dr. Manning's clinical interests include the treatment of knee ligament and cartilage injuries, the athlete's shoulder, and biologic solutions to cartilage restoration. He has authored scientific articles on knee and shoulder biomechanics and treatments.
My primary objective is restoring form and function, whether you have a nagging injury preventing work and exercise, or you're a competitive athlete with a sidelining injury. The key component to achieving this objective is listening to you, because you know your own body best! As a team, you and I will develop treatment plans that incorporate your individual goals and objectives. While well-trained in the most modern biologic and surgical treatments, I also incorporate a multifaceted approach including nutrition and exercise optimization. I promise to exhaust all non-surgical options before considering surgery as part of your treatment plan.
Personal Information
I grew up in Montana where working with my father at the family lumber yard fostered a love for the great outdoors and a deep appreciation for hard work. I was inspired into medicine by my mother, a clinical laboratory scientist, as she taught me to use a microscope and showed me the wonders of the human body at an early age.

My early passions were sports of all types, which led me to play four years of football and track at Dartmouth College, where I met my next love, my wife Erin. We've built our relationship around a shared love of adventure, travel and the outdoors. We can often be found exploring Washington's mountains and lakes with our young son, who spent much of his first year of life riding in a hiking backpack! After hanging up the football cleats, I had my own knee surgically treated so I know firsthand the value of a great surgical team and the support required to get back to activity. Nowadays, I'm an avid hiker, alpine skier, water skier and I play as many other sports as I can get my hands on, including pick-up basketball, tennis, mountain biking and strength training. In addition to my enthusiasm for sports and fitness, I'm always working to enhance my knowledge in nutrition and skills in the kitchen.
