Allan “Al” Ellsworth, PharmD., PA-C of EvergreenHealth Primary Care, Sultan received the MEDEX Northwest 2016 Pioneer Award. Ellsworth was recognized for his contributions to physician assistant (PA) education, training and mentorship, and his ability to forge new pathways for the profession and leave a lasting impact on future generations of PAs.

Renowned for his lively pharmacotherapy lectures for MEDEX Northwest, the University of Washington’s Physician Assistant Program, Ellsworth has positively impacted hundreds of students as a professor of pharmacy and family medicine at UW Medicine since 1982. After twenty-five years as a clinical pharmacist, he became the first dual PharmD/PA-C to come through the UW Medicine system as part of a combined School of Pharmacy-MEDEX program he helped establish in 2000. Ellsworth is also a highly regarded, former lead author of the trusted Mosby Medical Drug Reference Guide. The annual guide was used widely by family practice providers for accessing drug information and served as a precursor to today’s popular smartphone drug reference apps.

“Our EvergreenHealth community benefits from having someone of Ellsworth’s stature among our ranks,” said EvergreenHealth CEO Bob Malte.  “His passion for building relationships and improving patient health extends to the countless students he has mentored and the patients he cares for in our Sultan practice.”

Ellsworth and his colleagues at Sky Valley Family Medicine joined EvergreenHealth Primary Care, Sultan in June 2015. With nearly 40 years of experience in primary care education, practice and research he has seen the pharmacist’s role in health care evolve as an integral part of the patient’s clinical care team.

“One of the many reasons I’ve always gravitated toward patient care in my work is the responsibility I have to my patients,” said Ellsworth. “As a PA and primary care provider, people depend on you. They don’t want to see anyone else; they want to see you.”

Outside of his professional life, Ellsworth serves as Bishop of the Sultan Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He and his wife Kathy enjoy caring for three llamas and three cows on their property in Sultan where they can often be found spending time with their four adult children and 11 grandchildren, if not climbing in the nearby Cascade mountains.
