The health system is among Healthgrades’ nationally ranked top hospitals in four specialty areas
Kirkland, Wash. – EvergreenHealth announced today that it has been named among America’s 100 Best™ hospitals in several specialty care areas by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems. The health system once again earned recognition for excellence in stroke care, pulmonary care, gastrointestinal care, and general surgery, as part of Healthgrades’ 2021 Report to the Nation.
Each year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals across the country for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data and outcomes. Healthgrades’ latest report places EvergreenHealth among the top 2% of hospitals in the nation for specialty care in four key areas.
“To be recognized for another consecutive year for our commitment to the highest quality patient care outcomes by Healthgrades is such an honor,” said Jeff Tomlin, MD, CEO of EvergreenHealth. “On behalf of every physician, staff member and volunteer, we are humbled to be recognized for the high standards that guide us in our vision to be the most trusted source for health care solutions for our community.”
This year marks the 16th year in row that EvergreenHealth has been recognized for excellence in pulmonary care. In fact, is just one of two hospitals in the state to earn the 100 Best distinction for pulmonary care in 2021, as well.
In addition, this is the 12th year in a row that EvergreenHealth has ranked among the nation’s top hospitals for stroke care, and it is the only hospital in Washington state to earn the 100 Best distinction for stroke care for 2021. Within other specialties, the health system achieved recognition for cardiac care for 11 straight years; gastrointestinal care for the eighth consecutive year; and now for seven years in a row, it earned distinction for general surgery and critical care.
Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance and overall clinical quality, so patients can better evaluate hospital performance regarding specialty service areas. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as five-star (statistically significantly better than expected), three-star (not statistically different from expected) and one-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
Healthgrades’ 2021 report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals nationally, regionally and at the local level, and the impact that this variation may have on patients’ health outcomes across the U.S. Providing patients with access to data, can help them to better understand personal risk and in turn, help them take steps to improve their health. For example, a patient who receives care at a one-star rated hospital is at a greater risk of suffering from complications or even death, than a patient who receives care at a five-star rated hospital.
“Now more than ever, consumers understand the importance of hospital quality and are starting to become more diligent when researching where they receive care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer for Healthgrades. “When selecting a hospital, consumers can feel confident in the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for their commitment to quality care and exceptional outcomes.”
In addition to high marks from Healthgrades, EvergreenHealth earned an “A” rating from The Leapfrog Group in Hospital Patient Safety for the third consecutive year and was recognized in U.S. News & World Report’s “2020 Best Hospitals” rankings.
