Kirkland, Wash. – For the second year in a row, EvergreenHealth has been named among the best hospitals in the Puget Sound area and the state of Washington by U.S. News & World Report, ranking No. 3 in the Seattle Metropolitan area and No. 3 in Washington state. The 30th annual report compares nearly 5,000 medical centers nationwide in 25 medical specialties, procedures and conditions.
In addition to the health system’s overall ranking, EvergreenHealth earned a “high performance” rating in three specialties and five procedures, placing it in the top 10% of hospitals in patient outcomes for pulmonology and lung surgery for the fourth year in a row; nephrology for the second year in a row; as well as urology, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, heart failure, colon cancer surgery, and hip and knee replacement.
“We are honored to be named among this group of health systems in our region. This achievement reflects the dedication of our physicians, staff and volunteers who continually strive for excellence in advancing the health of every patient and family who entrusts us with their health care,” said Jeff Tomlin, MD, EvergreenHealth CEO. “By continually providing high-quality, compassionate care and an outstanding patient experience to those we serve, we can continue to enrich the health and well-being of every life we touch.”
U.S. News based its rankings on evaluations of each hospital's performance using key metrics such as patient safety scores, mortality rates and other data-driven outcomes. Physician surveys within 12 specialties are also factored into hospital scores, with surveyed physicians asked to name up to five hospitals they consider the best for difficult cases in their specialty.
To be ranked in a specialty, a hospital must excel in caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients. The ratings in procedures and conditions, by contrast, focus on typical Medicare patients.
EvergreenHealth is among 18 Washington hospitals to be included in the 2019 U.S. News rankings.
In addition to EvergreenHealth, University of Washington Medical Center, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Providence Regional Medical Center and Swedish Medical Center were selected as the top five hospitals in the Puget Sound region.
