Biplane Imaging Technology Now Available at EvergreenHealth

Advanced imaging will support complex vascular and neurosurgical procedures

Kirkland, Wash. – EvergreenHealth today announced the installation of a biplane imaging machine, which offers the most advanced interventional medical imaging technology available, enabling physicians on the medical center’s Kirkland campus to treat life-threatening cardiac, vascular and neurovascular conditions, which otherwise wouldn’t be possible. The biplane unit is part of an entirely new cardiovascular and neurosurgical treatment suite which, in addition to the biplane procedure room, features five preparation and recovery rooms for patients, as well as staff support space.

“Every second counts for a patient who has suffered a stroke or other severe vascular complication,” said EvergreenHealth CEO Amy Beiter, MD. “Having this lifesaving technology on site means our expert team of physicians and staff can treat the most complex cases without the need for patients to be transferred to other facilities.”

Biplane imaging uses two rotating cameras to produce detailed 3-D images of blood vessels, soft tissue and blood flow in real-time, enabling providers to precisely identify critical blockages, aneurysms or malformations in the vessels of the brain, heart or any area throughout the body, and treat them on the spot.

The machine’s simultaneous front and side views give physicians a roadmap of the precise location that requires treatment. Providers can also use the real-time images to guide stent and catheter placement during procedures to diagnose and treat blockages, aneurysms or blood clots in critical areas like the brain and heart.

For patients, biplane technology makes minimally invasive procedures a viable alternative to open surgery. The machine allows providers to see inside the vessels without performing traditional, more intrusive or significant surgery, resulting in a more comfortable experience and shorter recovery time for patients.

The new “cath lab” suite is an addition to the health system’s existing two procedural suites, which serve heart and vascular care patients with a range of diagnostic and minimally invasive procedures. EvergreenHealth’s cath labs are also increasingly used by interventional radiologists and neurosurgeons to perform other minimally invasive, non-cardiac procedures.

“Over the past few years, we have continued to develop our cardiology and vascular services, in addition to a thriving and comprehensive neurosurgical program at EvergreenHealth Neuroscience, Spine & Orthopedic Institute, enhancing our ability to care for a range of patients with complex cases. The biplane technology will further augment our ability to provide exceptional, comprehensive care under one roof,” said Dr. Beiter.

The expansion will increase EvergreenHealth’s capacity, adding about 1,200 new procedures in the first full year alone, with additional capacity expected in subsequent years. Later phases of development will also upgrade existing equipment in the health system’s current cath lab suites.

Procurement of the biplane was made possible through the support of the EvergreenHealth Foundation, community donors and the proceeds from the 2018 Evergreen Gala, and is part of the health system’s strategic plan to accommodate the rapid growth and the cardiovascular and neurosurgical needs of the Puget Sound region’s expanding Eastside community. Over the past two years, EvergreenHealth has welcomed seven new providers to their neurosurgical team, expanding its program.
