EvergreenHealth Begins Construction of New Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Radiology Suite - Archived

A third cath lab suite will open next year to accommodate growing needs of the community

Kirkland, Wash. – EvergreenHealth started the first phase of development for a new catheterization and interventional radiology suite slated to open next year on the health system’s campus in Kirkland. The new suite will offer more capacity to serve the needs of the growing Eastside community in addition to the ongoing need to treat cardiovascular disease, which remains the country’s number one cause of death.

The project is a critical part of the health system’s Master Facilities Plan, a 10-year blueprint designed to accommodate the rapid growth and health care needs of the Puget Sound region’s expanding Eastside community, and to enable the latest seismic and structural safety updates to be made to existing facilities.

The new “cath lab” suite is an addition to the health system’s existing two procedural suites, which serve heart and vascular care patients with a range of diagnostic and minimally invasive procedures. EvergreenHealth’s cath labs are also increasingly used by interventional radiologists to perform other minimally invasive, non-cardiac procedures.

“The success of EvergreenHealth’s cardiology, interventional radiology and vascular surgery services, coupled with the catheterization lab’s versatility, has fostered significant growth in the facility’s usage in recent years,” said Bob Malte, EvergreenHealth CEO. “Adding another catheterization lab with new infrastructure and equipment improvements helps us provide patients with the highest level of care, while meeting our growing community’s needs for its most pressing health issues.”

The suite’s expansion will include the addition of a bi-plane machine, a state-of-the-art interventional imaging unit that produces detailed 3-D images of vessels and blood flow in real-time. This advanced imaging technology helps providers precisely identify the source of a neurological blockage or malformation in the vessels, and prescribe immediate treatment. Procurement of the bi-plane was made possible through the support of the EvergreenHealth Foundation, community donors and the proceeds from the 2018 Evergreen Gala.

In addition to a procedure room, the new suite will feature five preparation and recovery rooms for patients, as well as staff support space. Later phases of development will also upgrade existing equipment in the health system’s current cath lab suites.

The expansion, estimated to be complete in 2019, will increase EvergreenHealth’s capacity to add about 1,200 new procedures in the first full year alone, with additional capacity expected in subsequent years.

The cath lab joins other important projects included in the organization’s Master Facilities Plan. To learn more about that plan, visit, or for more information on EvergreenHealth Heart & Vascular Care, visit
