Hospital Volunteer Services

Our hospital volunteers are key to helping EvergreenHealth provide exceptional service to our patients and visitors.

In return, we provide the opportunity for meaningful experiences and the chance to make a difference in people's lives.

How old do I need to be to volunteer?

  • 16 years of age or older to volunteer in the gift shops or at the information desks.
  • 18 years of age or older to volunteer in any department accepting volunteers.

What is the time commitment to be a volunteer?

You would make a six-month commitment to come in once a week for a three or four hour shift on the same day and shift each week OR commit to 100 volunteer service hours.

Is there a cost or fee to volunteer?

There is no cost to volunteer. You will receive free parking, training and uniforms at no cost.

Can I shadow a nurse or doctor as a volunteer?

Volunteer Services doesn't facilitate internships, externships, observing or shadowing experiences; these are usually arranged through educational programs at colleges and vocational schools. Please refer to the Job Shadow Students page for more information.

What volunteer opportunities do you offer?

EvergreenHealth volunteer opportunities are available on our Kirkland, Monroe and Redmond campuses:

Hospital Volunteers

Volunteers provide much needed support for staff, patients, and visitors by helping behind the scenes in nursing care areas, the Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging, Intensive Care Unit, Women & Children Units, Information Desks, Gift Shops, or in office areas.

Information Desks

Helping with a team of volunteers to greet visitors, look up patient rooms, provide directions, deliver flowers and mail to patients, escort visitors to their point of destination, help staff with errands, provide wheelchair assistance to patients, running lab errands, and other tasks as requested.

Gift Shops

Help in the hospital gift shop as a cashier, restock, and unpack and mark new merchandise.

Inpatient Unit Department Support

Volunteers help staff by greeting visitors, restocking supplies, running errands, transporting patients via wheelchair upon discharge, and various clerical tasks.

Emergency Department (Kirkland, Redmond, & Monroe campus)

Support staff in a very busy environment by overseeing the waiting room, helping patients and visitors; or providing support to staff by stocking supply carts, transporting patients in wheelchairs, running lab errands and other tasks.

Surgical Services

Various volunteer opportunities to support department in a variety of areas. Department volunteers help staff by restocking supplies, escorting family members to recovery room, running errands, transport patients via wheelchair upon discharge, and transfer of patient belongings. Surgery Liaison volunteers greet patients and families, oversee waiting room, serve as the liaison between clinical staff and family & friends, run errands, and help with paper management.

Diagnostic Imaging

Assist staff in Diagnostic Imaging, MRI, and Breast Center with errands, discharges, and paperwork management duties. Help patients and visitors by overseeing the waiting room and escorting patients to exam rooms.

Respiratory Care

Provide department support by putting together intubation and bronchoscopy trays, stocking supplies, assisting with equipment setup, and assisting with special projects.

Biomedical Dept.

Provide department support by replacing batteries in various equipment around the hospital and assisting with inventory.

Visiting Volunteers

Visiting volunteers provide hospitality to patients with short visits and offering practical and basic comfort needs & items.

Infant Cuddlers

Support parents by holding and comforting infants.

Animal-Assisted Therapy Teams

Therapy dogs and their handlers visit patients to provide emotional support.

Music Program

Pianists provide soothing music to hospital visitors in a warm and welcoming environment.

Cancer Services

Provide clerical and other support in the Cancer Resource Center and Radiation Oncology.

Office & Clinic Support

Help in various hospital support areas, offices or clinics with special projects or routine clerical tasks such as copying, faxing, chart preparation, filing, data entry, and mail distribution. Assist with restocking supplies and inventory.
